Christians Spiritual Devotion

Bible Text: Acts 1, 2

I have always been fascinated by the biblical account of the experience the disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ had when He was just taken up to heaven. It is not an ordinary thing for you to be sitting together with about 119 other persons in a single room for a never fixed day and expecting something unusual to happen just because someone told you so. It sounds crazy, right? But that is what the disciples did.

Spiritual Devotion is the consistent and committed attachment and inclination to the ways of God. A spiritually devoted Christian is one who is totally sold out to God, someone who has utmost affection and zeal for the things of God (PSALMS 69:9). He devoutly observes acts of worship and service to God willingly.

Spiritual Devotion is beyond observing religious duties and requirements. It is total adherence to the highest authority which is God’s. It entails having a hungry and thirsty heart for the things of God.

TRUTHS ABOUT SPIRITUAL DEVOTION

• IT IS NOT GENDER BASED: “They all met together and were constantly united in prayers, along with Mary, the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus” (ACTS 1:14-15). There is no rule that says that spiritual devotion is the brothers’ thing. Sisters should not leave lengthy hours seeking the face of God in prayers to the Adam gender. God is the creator of all so He desires that every one of us both male and female should tarry in seeking Him. If there is a Paul, there can be a Paulina too.

• UNITY AND PATIENCE MUST BE LEARNT: “On the day of Pentecost, all the believers were meeting together in one place” (ACTS 2:1). There is a reason why patience is a fruit of the spirit. RCF’s current assistant zonal coordinator, Pastor Emmanuel Azenabor in one of his teaching said some people are always in a hurry to leave the presence of God but can still make out time to watch film series even at the expense of their academics. The disciples of old were not told plainly the day that the promised Holy Spirit will come but they were devoted and wisely applied the rule of prayer to quicken the promise. In your fellowship with God, your heart, mind, and body must be unified.

HOW TO BE SPIRITUALLY DEVOTED TO GOD?

• Be Intentional
• Be willing
• Be ready to spend quality time with God
• Be a person of both the Word and prayer
• Love God and love the gathering of the brethren.

CONCLUSION

To be spiritually devoted is to grow continuously in the full knowledge of God. In this end time, young believers who are not devoted to God are prone to several attacks from the devil like depression, suicidal thoughts, failing grades, and addiction. Eventually, they become prey to the kingdom of darkness.

Today, there is hope in Jesus Christ for every one of us. Spiritual devotion helps us to wait on God in total dependence. Definitely, those who know their God, as the Bible has said shall renew their strength. (Isaiah 40:31)

Prayer point: Lord help me to be spiritually devoted to you. Let your love and zeal consume me. (Amen)
